Tonometry

If your pet needs to have an eye exam, contact us today!

Your veterinarian may recommend tonometry if your pet:

  • is a senior
  • has a breed predisposition to glaucoma
  • has diabetes
  • has hypothyroidism
  • has other chronic eye conditions or injuries
  • has severe eye pain

Tonometry is a piece of equipment that allows us to measure intraocular pressure, or the pressure inside the eye. We use a Tono-Pen, which is a handheld device shaped like a large marker, to measure this pressure. It provides a digital readout of the amount of force applied to the eye.

Tonometry is used to diagnose glaucoma, a common and painful disease characterized by increased fluid pressure inside the eye. It frequently damages the ocular nerve, resulting in decreased vision (tunnel vision) and even blindness. Early detection is critical in preventing permanent vision changes.
