Your veterinarian may recommend tonometry if your pet:
- is a senior
- has a breed predisposition to glaucoma
- has diabetes
- has hypothyroidism
- has other chronic eye conditions or injuries
- has severe eye pain
We can measure intraocular pressure, or the pressure inside the eye, using a device called a tonometer. We utilize a Tono-Pen, a portable instrument in the form of a big marker, to measure this pressure. The amount of force being applied to the eye is digitally read out by the device.
Glaucoma is a frequent and painful condition marked by elevated fluid pressure inside the eye, and it is diagnosed using tonometry. Tunnel vision and even blindness might result from it damaging the optic nerve frequently. To stop long-term visual changes, early identification is essential.
