Ultrasound
If your doctor determines that an ultrasound is the best next step for your pet’s care, our team will work closely with you to coordinate the right type of scan on our upcoming schedule.
Whether your pet needs a routine check or a complex diagnostic workup, we offer three tiers of imaging tailored to their specific medical needs:
- Screening Ultrasound: A brief, proactive scan often used to establish a healthy baseline. Your veterinarian may recommend a screening ultrasound based on your pet’s age (especially for our senior patients), specific breed predispositions, or subtle changes in their routine bloodwork. It is a powerful preventative tool to catch potential abnormalities early, before they become larger problems.
- Focused Ultrasound: A targeted examination zeroing in on a specific organ or region. This is ideal when we need to investigate a specific symptom, evaluate a known issue, or monitor an ongoing condition.
- Full Abdominal Ultrasound: A comprehensive, detailed evaluation of the entire abdominal cavity, including the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, and gastrointestinal tract. This in-depth scan is crucial for diagnosing complex internal illnesses and unexplained symptoms.
Expert Care & Flexible Options
We utilize a flexible approach that guarantees expert oversight for every scan:
- In-House Imaging with Specialist Review: Many of our ultrasounds are performed conveniently in our clinic by our highly trained Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) sonographer or a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) holding a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential. Once the scan is complete, the images and videos are sent to a specialized radiological service where a board-certified radiologist reviews and interprets them. We have these expert results back within a week.
On-Site Specialist Imaging: For certain complex cases, we also partner with Northwest Veterinary Imaging to bring specialized care directly to our clinic. Through this collaboration, they will send either a board-certified veterinary radiologist or a dedicated veterinarian-sonographer to our practice to perform your pet’s ultrasound.
Scheduling Your Ultrasound
Because of the specialized equipment and expertise required, our non-emergency ultrasound services are performed on designated days. All ultrasound appointments are scheduled exclusively via referral from a Seattle Veterinary Associates doctor.
