If your dog has been receiving Librela for arthritis, you may have heard concerns circulating about its safety. Librela is an injectable monoclonal antibody therapy that was recently introduced in the U.S. to help dogs with osteoarthritis pain. Since we began offering this treatment in 2023, we’ve seen many dogs benefit from its effects, enjoying greater mobility and comfort.

However, as with any medication, there are potential side effects. Here’s what we know so far.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Librela?

While most dogs tolerate Librela well, the most commonly reported side effects include:

  • Mild urinary tract infections
  • Skin changes

Some pet owners have also heard reports of more serious neurological effects, including wobbliness, seizures, or collapse. We have reviewed the latest data from both the FDA and Zoetis (Librela’s manufacturer) and want to share what we’ve learned.

If My Dog Has Been on Librela for Months, Should I Be Worried?

The reported side effects do not appear to be cumulative. This means that if a dog is going to experience an unwanted effect from Librela, it typically happens shortly after the injection—within the first few days to a week.

If your dog has been receiving Librela for months and is doing well, there is no evidence suggesting that you need to stop treatment. In fact, if your dog is benefiting from the injections and moving more comfortably, we recommend continuing as long as they are responding positively.

Before starting any new medication, your veterinarian will discuss the benefits, risks, and what to watch for. The vast majority of reported side effects have been mild and resolved on their own.

Does the Manufacturer Still Stand Behind Librela?

Yes. Zoetis continues to fully support Librela’s safety and effectiveness. Reported side effects occur in only about 0.1% of dogs receiving the medication. Based on current data, we will continue to offer Librela under your veterinarian’s guidance to ensure the best possible pain relief for your pet.

Can Librela Cause Heart Disease?

Right now, there is no evidence that Librela affects heart health or causes heart disease. Some concerns have been raised because Librela blocks Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)—a key part of how it relieves arthritis pain. NGF is present in many parts of the body, including heart cells. However, there is no data suggesting that Librela negatively impacts the heart. This remains a theoretical concern, not a proven risk.
